history

Remembering World War II

Prehistoric and Roman finds testify that Consdorf is located in a very old settlement area. In a document, Consdorf is mentioned in 816 as "Cunolphi Villa", 953 as "Conolfi Villa", 1131 as "Consdesdorf", 1552 as "Kontzdorf", 1595 as "Consturf". The village belonged to the oldest possession of the Trier women's abbey Oeren and remained the center of the Oeren manorial rule in this area until the French Revolution. Various historians place the beginning of the Parish Consdorf around the year 700. Because all documents have been lost, the parish church as such was first mentioned in a document in 1229. The number of residents decreased significantly as a result of the Thirty Years' War and the plague in 1636. In the following years the population increased again (around 1787). In Consdorf there has been a nursing home run by the Tertiary Carmelites, the so-called "Zitha Sisters", since 1919, which in 1999 was recognized by the long-term care insurance as a care facility.

In contrast to Consdorf, where written sources already exist from the 11th century, Scheidgen was created much later. The name is mentioned as early as the 16th century, but it is hardly a place name. It was not until 1766 that the first entry of the place name Scheidgen was found in the marriage register of the Parish Consdorf. In the years that followed, the name “Scheidgen” was only rarely mentioned as a place name. However, after the unrest of the French Revolution , the population grew rapidly. A census from 1843 reports 43 family names. In 1890 this up-and-coming town had 288 inhabitants, while Breidweiler 141, Colbette 84, Consdorf 1076. Today there are over 130 houses and around 480 inhabitants in Scheidgen.

Worth seeing

Among other things, the parish church from the 18th century with its Gothic tower from the 12th / 13th century is worth seeing. Century and the baroque altar with a large statue of St. Bartholomew . The tower is classified as a national monument.

Consdorf, in the middle of Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, is the starting point for a whole range of beautiful hiking trails with many viewpoints of the Sauer Valley and the Mullerthal. The area is particularly characterized by unusual rock formations along which the hiking trails lead (e.g. "Kuelscheier", "Goldfralay").
