The canton of Mersch is located in the center of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . Besides the canton of Luxembourg , it is the only canton without a common border with other countries. It borders in the north on the canton Diekirch , in the east on the cantons Echternach and Grevenmacher , in the south on the cantons Luxemburg and Capellen and in the west on the canton Redingen .

Until the abolition of the Luxembourg districts on October 3, 2015, the canton was part of the Luxembourg district .
