The canton of Luxembourg is located in the south of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and, along with the canton of Mersch, is the only canton without a national external border. It borders the cantons of Mersch and Grevenmacher to the north, the canton of Remich to the east, the canton of Esch an der Alzette to the south and the canton of Capellen to the west .

Until the abolition of the Luxembourg districts on October 3, 2015, the canton was part of the Luxembourg district .
