history

The name Contern can be found for the first time in a charter from the year 879. The first official mention of Contern is contained in a bull of the honored Pope Honorius II from 1128. The history of Contern (the name is of Celtic origin) certainly goes back to pre-Roman times. In contrast to the Celtic remains, the remains of Roman origin reveal the importance that Contern had during this period. The remains of a Roman temple and several villas as well as an aqueduct that went through the current center of the village have been found. The Contern of the Middle Ages is shaped by the influence of knighthood and Christianity. From the end of the 13th century it was a parish and owned a castle. Today only the church bears witness to this period.

As a simple rural municipality, the municipality of Contern has included the villages of Contern, Moutfort, Medingen and Oetringen since 1945.
