Sandweiler is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to the canton of Luxembourg .

The community consists of the localities Findel and Sandweiler.

Partly on the territory of the municipality is five kilometers northeast of the capital and borders directly on Luxembourg Airport . In 1939 they began to straighten the terrain. During the Second World War , the area was used as a German flight school for glider pilots. The airport was inaugurated in 1946.

In 1955 the main line was expanded from 2,000 to 2,830 meters and extended over the years. Today the runway is 4000 meters long. In 1975 the new Aérogare was put into operation. In 1993 a new 35 meter high tower was built. Work has been going on since 2003 on a new airport building that will be linked to the rail network, among other things.

Sandweiler is home to the German war cemetery Sandweiler with graves of 10,913 fallen German soldiers from the Second World War and one soldier from the First World War .

In the nature reserve Birelergronn in the Valley of Birelerbaach water flows from springs, which is used as drinking water for Sandweiler and the city of Luxembourg today.

Sandweiler-Contern station is served by two local transport lines every hour, the CFL regional train line, which runs from Luxembourg-Gare to Wasserbillig, and the RE11, which runs from Luxembourg-Gare via Wasserbillig, Trier Hbf, Wittlich, Bullay and Cochem to Koblenz Hbf commutes.
