Lamberto Scannabecchi came from a humble background and was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Ostia in 1117 . In the conflict that flared up after the election of Pope Gelasius II between the supporters of the new Pope and the imperial party, which was supported by the Italian Frangipani , Lamberto sided with the Pope and fled with him into exile in France . Even after the early death of Gelasius, Honorius stood on the side of the papal curia and became a loyal follower of the new Pope Calixt II. He used the diplomatic talent of the Cardinal Bishop to try to come to an understanding with Emperor Heinrich V. In fact, Lamberto had a considerable contribution to this of the Worms Concordat and the associated preliminary settlement of the investiture dispute .

The mood of the Frangipani towards Lamberto also changed. After the death of Calixt II, Tebaldo Buccapecus had already been elected Pope when the Frangipani Lamberto opposed the candidate. He was elected on December 15, 1124 and enthroned on December 21. In view of the unclear legitimacy of his election, Lamberto did not want to accept the office. Due to the legal disposition shown by this, of course, he also won over the followers of Buccapecus, who thereupon renounced the tiara , so that Lamberto could take up his office. In 1126, at the request of Norbert von Xanten , he recognized the Premonstratensian order .

During his pontificate , Honorius sought to strengthen the curia politically, not without success. In the internal political conflicts of the Holy Roman Empire, he sided with King Lothar III. and pronounced the ban on the Hohenstaufen anti-king Konrad . The Frangipani, meanwhile, strengthened the influence of the Holy See in northern Italy.

Honorius II died in 1130 after a five-year pontificate.
