Celestine II (Pope Elect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Celestine II , Latin the Heavenly , real name Theobaldus Buccapecus or Teobaldo (* in Rome ; † 1126 ) was elected Pope on December 15, 1124 . He is wrongly counted among the anti-popes, but belongs to the pope electors .

Life

Theobaldus Buccapecus was probably of urban Roman origin. Until April 17, 1121 he was occupied as cardinal deacon of Santa Maria Nuova in Rome , from April 6, 1123 as cardinal priest of San Anastasia (also in Rome). On December 15, 1124, he was elected as Celestine II in Rome ( Church of St. Pancras ) to succeed Pope Calixt II, who had died three days earlier . In this respect, the term antipope is wrong. In particular, because there was later a Pope with this name , he is listed in most papal lists as an antipope, but should correctly be called Pope Elect Coelestin (II.) .

However, the election in the Church of St. Pancras was disrupted by armed supporters of the Roman city noble Roberto Frangipane . Under his leadership, gunmen penetrated the church and dispersed the voters.

In opposition to Celestine II, the imperial noble families raised the Cardinal Bishop of Ostia , Lamberto Scannabecchi, to the chair of Petri. However, in view of the irregularities in the election , the latter, who took the name Honorius II , waived the tiara because he did not want to expose himself to the suspicion of presuming an office to which he was legally not entitled.

As a result, Honorius won over the followers of Coelestin II, who on December 16, 1124, just one day after his election, renounced his papal dignity, whereupon Honorius II was confirmed in another canonical election.

Buccapecus is never mentioned again afterwards.
