Fränk René Schleck (born April 15, 1980 in Luxembourg ) is a former Luxembourg road cyclist who won the Amstel Gold Race in 2006 and the Tour de Suisse in 2010 and was third in the Tour de France in 2011 .

Career

Fränk Schleck, whose father Johny was also a professional cyclist, received a contract from Bjarne Riis with the CSC-Saxo Bank team in 2003 , where he stayed until the end of the 2010 season before he left the team with his brother Andy and joined Leopard Trek connected.

He achieved his first internationally significant success by winning the Amstel Gold Race in 2006 after attacking from a leading group on the finish slope. In the same year he was able to win the 15th stage of the Tour de France from Gap to L'Alpe d'Huez . He was part of a larger breakaway group and distanced his last companion, Damiano Cunego , three kilometers before the mountain finish .

On April 27, 2008 Schleck was defeated in the final of the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège only by Alejandro Valverde and Davide Rebellin . One place behind him was his younger brother Andy fourth. At the following Tour de France 2008 he wore the yellow jersey of the overall leader for four days before he lost the lead after an attack by his teammate and eventual overall winner Carlos Sastre . He finished this tour in sixth overall.

Fränk Schleck won the mountainous 17th stage of the Tour de France 2009 ahead of Alberto Contador and his brother Andy Schleck and ended up fifth in the overall standings. In addition, the older of the Schleck brothers won the eighth stage of the Tour of California , came second at Paris – Nice and, in addition to the third stage, also won the overall ranking of the Tour of Luxembourg .

In 2010 he won the second stage of the Tour of Luxembourg and took second place in the overall ranking. In the subsequent Tour de Suisse , the Luxembourger won the third stage and, after finishing thirteenth in the individual time trial in the ninth and final stage, also took over the overall ranking of this tour. In a serious fall on the third stage of the Tour de France 2010 , he suffered such serious injuries in the shoulder area with a triple fracture of the shoulder blade and a complicated fracture of the collarbone that he had to give up the race.

After Schleck won the overall ranking of the Critérium International in the spring of 2011 , he finished third in the subsequent Tour de France 2011 with 2:30 minutes on the winner Cadel Evans and his brother and teammate Andy, who finished with 1:34 minutes Back in second place.

Schleck tested positive for the diuretic xipamide after the 13th stage of the 2012 Tour de France . The UCI announced this on the evening of July 17th. Diuretics are often used to mask the use of doping substances. His team withdrew him from the tour on the same day. On July 20, 2012, the result was confirmed after the analysis of the B sample. In January 2013 Fränk Schleck was banned for one year retrospectively from July 14, 2012. He could not take part in the Tour de France 2013 . On July 4, 2013, Schleck's Team RadioShack announced that they would no longer use him after the ban had expired and that they would end their contract with him. This is made possible by a clause in Schleck's contract, according to which termination would be possible in the event of a positive doping result.

After his suspension had expired, Schleck was Luxembourg road champion for the fifth time after 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2011 and finished the Tour de France in 2014 in 12th place overall.

In the Tour de France 2015 he could not start due to the long-term consequences of a fall in the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège . On the mountain finish of the 16th stage of the Vuelta a España 2015 , he won his first international bike race after his suspension and at the same time his last international competition of his career.

Fränk Schleck ended his cycling career at the end of the 2016 season.

Contact Eufemiano Fuentes

The Süddeutsche Zeitung claimed in its September 27, 2008 edition that Schleck had been exposed as a customer of the doctor Eufemiano Fuentes , after whom the Fuentes doping scandal is named. This is proven by a transfer to Fuentes from March 2006. When asked by the newspaper, Schleck said that he had not doped. The money transferred was intended for a training program. Schleck himself admitted that he had contact with Fuentes, but that he broke it off as soon as he heard of his links to doping. On the basis of the allegations, the Luxembourg anti-doping agency ALAD investigated Schleck, but closed the proceedings as there was no evidence of attempted doping or doping carried out.

Awards

On December 15, 2006, Fränk Schleck was named the best male athlete in 2006 in Luxembourg, ahead of David Fiegen , the silver medalist in the 800 meters at the European Athletics Championships in 2006 .
