The Tour of California ( German California Tour ) is an American road bike race .

The stage race was first held in February 2006 over eight sections and runs approximately 1,100 kilometers along the west coast of the United States each year. It was part of the UCI America Tour until 2016 and was initially classified in category 2.1 . In its second year in 2007, the race was upgraded to the hors category , making it the most important stage race in the United States. The competition was added to the UCI WorldTour calendar starting with the 2017 season .

In 2010, the race was held for the first time in May.

Since it was held in 2006, the main sponsor has been the biotechnology company Amgen , which first developed artificial erythropoietin in 1985 , which became known as a blood doping agent in cycling. In 2017 the race was named Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women's Race empowered with SRAM .

In 2015, a three-stage race for women was added for the first time; there were also invitation races for women, such as a one-day race and criterion in 2014 and an individual time trial in 2015 . The women's race was added to the calendar of the newly introduced UCI Women's WorldTour in 2016 as a stage race .

In October 2019, the event for 2020 was canceled.
