Tour of Poland
The Tour of Poland (officially called Tour de Pologne in the media , in Polish Wyścig dookoła Polski ) is a stage race within professional road cycling .
The Tour of Poland usually comprises seven or eight stages. It started for the first time on September 7, 1928 in the Polish capital Warsaw with the participation of 71 amateur cyclists. The stage race was originally organized on the initiative of the Warsaw Cyclist Society and the traditional Polish sports magazine Przegląd Sportowy .
Since 1952, since the Tour of Poland has been held annually, it has been the most important competition of its kind in Poland . However, until 1993 only amateurs were allowed to start. This arrangement meant that there were almost only domestic winners. However, the Tour of Poland experienced an enormous upgrade in the 1990s after the organizational takeover by the Polish entrepreneur and former professional cyclist Czesław Lang . In 2005, it was included in the racing calendar of the so-called UCI Pro Tour . The stage race has been part of the successor series UCI WorldTour since 2011 .
As part of the Tour of Poland, different jersey will be awarded to leading participants in four classifications . The yellow jersey for the leader in the overall classification, the white jersey for the leader in the points classification , the purple jersey for the leader in the mountain classification and the dark blue jersey for the most combative driver. In the meantime, the leader in the team competition was given a red jersey.
On the third stage of the Tour of Poland 2019, the 22-year-old Belgian Bjorg Lambrecht died after a fall.
