Scoring jersey
A scoring jersey is a cycling jersey that is used to recognize the leading participant in a scoring in stage races in cycling or to make it clear to the audience.
Probably the first classification jersey was the yellow jersey initiated by Henri Desgrange in the Tour de France in 1919 . The jerseys and the associated cash rewards are often sponsored by companies. The colors of the jerseys and the corporate identity colors of the respective sponsor are often identical. For example, in 1975 the red-dotted jersey was created for the mountain classification of the Tour de France , which was sponsored by the Menier chocolate factory , whose chocolate was wrapped in white paper with red dots. Over the years, the jersey colors for a rating do not always stay the same. For example, the jersey for the overall ranking at the Vuelta changed color nine times between its introduction in 1935 and 2012: from orange to white, orange, red, white, yellow, orange, yellow, gold and finally to red. For the longest time it was yellow (43 times) or gold (11 times). From 1998 the International Peace Tour had the same jersey colors as the Tour de France for the individual ratings .
According to the regulations of the World Cycling Association UCI , the award of a top rider's jersey is mandatory for international stage races. Depending on the UCI category of the race, the organizer can award up to three ( UCI WorldTour and categories HC and 1 of the UCI Continental Circuits ) or five further (all other races) leadership jerseys for special evaluations.
