The 85th Tour de France took place from July 11th to August 2nd, 1998 and ran over 21 stages over 3877 km, of which 3712 km were classified. 189 racing drivers took part, of which only 96 were classified after teams were excluded and withdrawn due to a serious doping scandal.
route
The tour started in the Irish capital Dublin and stayed on the island for two more days. In an anti-clockwise direction, after a series of flat stages , it went from Brittany first to the Pyrenees , then to the Alps . In addition to the prologue, two individual time trials were held; as in the previous two years, there was no team time trial . Stage locations outside France were in Switzerland except in Ireland .
Favorites
The Festina affair not only decimated the field of drivers from the outset, but also took some favorites out of the race before the start, such as Alex Zülle or Richard Virusque , who was second in the previous year. Both were part of the Festina team. So only last year's winner Jan Ullrich was considered a serious favorite. Marco Pantani had already won the Giro d'Italia in spring and was third in the 1997 Tour. However, his qualities in the time trial were not considered good enough to be considered a contender for victory.
Race course
After the flat stages, which were mostly made up of the sprinters among themselves (with the exception of a stage win by Jens Heppner ), Ullrich won the first big time trial ahead of Tyler Hamilton and Bobby Julich . Pantani was already more than four minutes behind, Ullrich took the lead in the overall standings. Laurent Desbien Ullrich was able to take off the yellow jersey for two days , which was the reward for a successful escape in which the breakaway group crossed the finish line over seven minutes before the peloton. Ullrich stayed ahead of his direct competitors in the overall standings and took over the yellow jersey again after the first stage in the high mountains of the Pyrenees in Luchon . So everything went according to plan for Ullrich's second tour victory.
The German was able to maintain leadership as far as the Alps. Still in Grenoble he had a lead of 1:11 minutes over Bobby Julich in the overall standings. Marco Pantani was 3:01 minutes behind. On the royal stage to Les Deux Alpes , Ullrich should lose his lead. From wet and cold and a Hunger tormented, he dragged himself behind with a gap of 8:57 minutes behind stage winner Pantani up the finish. Pantani took over the yellow jersey, Ullrich was now fourth, almost six minutes behind. Willing not to give up, he won the subsequent 16th stage to Albertville , but could not shorten the gap to Pantani. The 17th stage did not take place, the drivers went on strike against the bad treatment of their colleagues because of the doping cases. All Spanish teams did not compete anymore.
Ullrich was able to win the time trial on the penultimate stage again; it was enough to move up to second place in the overall standings. Pantani lost 2:35 minutes to Ullrich, but he had a lead of 3:21 in the overall standings, which meant his first Tour win.
Doping scandal
The 1998 Tour de France was overshadowed by a serious doping scandal that went beyond the initial Festina affair . It led to a trial of strength between the doping investigators and the Tour participants, who responded with a strike and sometimes with the withdrawal from the race.
On July 8, the Festina team nurse Willy Voet was arrested in northern France while transporting doping substances, including more than 400 ampoules of EPO . This event only became known shortly after the tour started. On July 14, when Voet was questioned, he admitted that he had acted on instructions from Festina officials, and not for the first time. On July 15, sports director Bruno Roussel and team doctor Eric Ryckaert were arrested and the Festina team hotel searched.
On July 23, the Festina drivers were temporarily arrested and interrogated in Lyon. Seven drivers admitted that they were doping, only Richardirusesque and Pascal Hervé claimed that they may have been doped without their knowledge.
Meanwhile, it became known that in March of the same year a team car from TVM-Farm Frites was caught on the French border with EPO vials. TVM sports director Cees Priem and doctor Andrei Michailov were arrested in Reims . The drivers of the other teams showed their solidarity with their colleagues and went on a first strike on the 12th stage on July 24th by showing up two hours late. After several discussions, all parties agreed to continue the tour. The first 16 kilometers of the stage were driven slowly and under neutralized conditions.
On July 26, syringes and other suspicious substances were discovered near a hotel where crews GAN, Saeco, Casino and Kelme had stayed. On July 28th, the TVM team's hotel was searched by police. The drivers were taken to a hospital where blood, urine and hair samples were taken from them.
At the 17th stage on July 29th there was another strike. He was directed against the treatment of TVM drivers by the police and the doping tests carried out . Before the start or soon after, all drivers removed their start numbers. Numerous drivers, including overall leader Marco Pantani, underscored their protest with a temporary sit-in on the street. Then the race was demonstratively lost and the victory symbolically left to the TVM team. The teams from ONCE, Banesto and Riso Scotti left the tour. The jury decided that the stage would not be counted and that those 116 riders who had crossed the finish line would be allowed to continue the tour.
On July 30th, Kelme and Vitalico withdrew from the tour. On the same day, Rodolfo Massi (Casino) who wore the polka dot jersey and Nicolas Terrados-Cepeda (ONCE), a doctor, were arrested. Corticoids, anabolic steroids and growth hormones were found in Massi's suitcase. He claimed to have carried the drug with him only for personal use, but was viewed as a dealer. At the next stage on July 31, the entire TVM team got out.
On July 24, 2013, the Anti-Doping Commission of the French Senate published the results of a subsequent investigation of doping samples from 1998. EPO was detected in the samples of both the overall winner Marco Pantani and the second Jan Ullrich. Since the investigations are scientific analyzes and no B-samples were available for control, these results have no consequences under sports law.
