Roberto Caruso

Roberto Caruso (born May 23, 1967 in Sannicandro di Bari , Italy ) is a former Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

Caruso usually drove road races and had his greatest successes as an amateur in 1990. This includes the runner-up title at the road world championships in 1990 in Japan . He achieved another second place in the Italian stage race Giro delle Regioni , where he also won a stage. He won victories in the traditional one-day races GP Ciclistico San Basso and Giro Ciclistico del Cigno.

In 1991 Caruso received his first professional contract with the Italian cycling team Selle Italia-Magniarredo . This year only a 67th place was registered at the Giro del Friuli . It was not until 1993 that Caruso succeeded in firmly gaining a foothold in the professional scene. He won the Grand Prix di Lugano and took part in the great races Giro d'Italia (98th place) and Giro di Lombardia (72nd place). He also competed in the Giro d'Italia in 1996 (66th) and 1997 (76th). His one-off appearance at the Tour de France was unsuccessful when he gave up after the tenth stage in 1998. In the cycling monuments , he competed twice in the Tour of Lombardy , in 1993 and in 1994 with 28th place, also in 1994 in the Tour of Flanders (90th) and at Milan – Sanremo in 1995 (145th). In 1995 Caruso had his best year as a professional, three top ten placings, including first place at Tre Valli Varesine Tre Valli Varesine earned him the highest ranking of his career in the UCI world rankings with 96th place .

Caruso had his last professional year in 1998 with a contract with the Italian cycling team Riso Scotti . Before that, he had his longest engagement at ZG Mobili, also from Italy, when he was four years old. In 1998 he took part in the German stage race Rhineland-Palatinate Tour and finished in 48th place.
