UCI Road World Championships 1990

The 1990 UCI Road World Championships were held for the first time in Asia in Utsunomiya , Japan , from the end of August to the beginning of September . As a world champion in were professional drivers of Belgian Rudy Dhaenens in the amateurs Mirco Gualdi from Italy and among women the Frenchwoman Catherine Marsal determined. In the team decisions, the Soviet Union won the men and the Netherlands won the women.

Professionals

The field of 145 professional drivers had to cover a distance of 261 kilometers and complete 18 laps. After the political change in 1989 , five professionals from the GDR started for the first time . In the early stages of the race, a top group of 20 formed, from which the two Belgians Rudy Dhaenens and Dirk De Wolf were able to break away ten kilometers from the finish . Almost always driving in the slipstream of De Wolf, Dhaenens won the final sprint. Eight seconds later, the chasing field followed, in which the German Andreas Kappes was. He crossed the finish line in eighth place, while Mario Kummer finished the race 45 seconds behind as the best GDR driver. Only 57 drivers crossed the finish line, including the West Germans Peter Hilse (31st) and Darius Kaiser (49th) and the second GDR driver Uwe Ampler .
