The 81 UCI Road World Championships were held from 21 to 28 September 2014 Spanish Ponferrada instead.

The world championships consisted of a total of twelve competitions, a road race , a team time trial and an individual time trial for men and women, as well as a road race and an individual time trial for U23 drivers and juniors.

Spain hosted cycling world championships for the seventh time, after Lasarte (1965), Montjuïc (1973), Barcelona (1984), Benidorm (1992), San Sebastián (1997) and Madrid (2005). Ponferrada, a city of 68,000 people, was the only candidate to host these world championships. While the streets of the World Cup in Italy had been lined with thousands of spectators the previous year, the response in Ponferrada was rather poor and far below the expectations of 350,000 spectators. The event cost the city, which has an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent, twelve million dollars.

The most successful athlete in the world championships was the German cyclist Lisa Brennauer with the almost optimal yield of two gold medals in team and individual time trials and a silver medal in road races . The team of the Federation of German Cyclists won the medal ranking with a total of three gold and two silver medals; however, Australia won most of the medals with a total of eight medals. Stefan Küng won a bronze medal for Switzerland, Austria remained without medals.

Michał Kwiatkowski from Poland won the men's road race , becoming the first Polish professional world champion in cycling history. Most recently, his compatriot Joachim Halupczok was world champion of amateurs in 1989 .

The 2014 Road World Championships were televised in 158 countries. The road world championships could not be seen on German television, in contrast to Switzerland and Austria. The competitions were broadcast live on the UCI channel on YouTube . Commentators were José Been from the Netherlands and Phil Liggett from Great Britain .
