Joachim Halupczok (born June 3, 1968 in Ozimek or Tempelhof (Niwki), † February 5, 1994 in Opole ) was a Polish cyclist .

Athletic career

Halupczok started cycling with the LKS Ziemia Opolska cycling club. In the junior categories he dominated all over Poland . His first major success was winning the stage race Dusika Tour 1986, the most important stage race for juniors in Austria .

In 1987, Halupczok won three gold medals at the Polish cycling championships. He not only won the road race , but also on the track and in cross-country races .

At the Olympic Games in 1988 Halupczok won a silver medal with the Polish team in 100 km team driving. In 1989 he won the Gran Premio della Liberazione and became Polish road racing champion . At the subsequent cycling world championships in Chambéry , he won the silver medal in team driving and was amateur world champion in individual races.

Halupczok left the amateur scene in 1990 and signed his first professional contract with the Diana-Colnago-Animex cycling team . Other teams followed: Del Tongo-Animex and GB-MG Boys .

In 1990 Halupczok was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia during one of the routine examinations . Halupczok then spent the entire 1991 season in bed. At the beginning of 1992 he was allowed to ride again, in April he was still on the routes of Spain ( Vuelta a España ) and was fifth at the Grand Prix Midi Libre .

But the heart problem worsened and Halupczok was forced to resign. In Łódź he underwent special medical treatment and was allowed to exercise in moderation. A year before his death, Halupczok took part in a soccer tournament. A ball that hit him in the chest made him faint. The following diagnosis was: Chronic inflammation of the heart muscle ( myocarditis ).

A number of books appeared in Belgium and France in the second half of the 1990s , suggesting that Halupczok's death was linked to doping . However, Halupczok's friends and colleagues vehemently deny this.

Halupczok was married and had two children. He was buried in Osowiec Śląski .

Honors

Since 1994, the highest mountain rating at the Tour de Pologne has been dedicated to "Achim", as Halupczok was called in the German-speaking Opole region.
