Luciano Ciancola

Luciano Ciancola (born October 22, 1929 in Rome , † July 25, 2011 in Ardea ) was an Italian cyclist. In 1952 he won the world championship in road racing for amateurs .

Athletic career

Ciancola achieved his success only as a road driver . He initially drove as an amateur and won his first race in the Italian road race Giro di Campania in 1950. In 1951 he took part in an amateur road world championship for the first time and finished fifth. A year later he became amateur world champion in Luxembourg.

After winning the world championship title, Ciancola moved to the professional driver camp, where he received a contract with the Italian racing team Arbos-Pirelli. By winning the Milan – Bologna race, he had a successful debut with the professionals . In 1953 Ciancola took part in the Tour of Britain. He won the second stage but later retired from the race. In 1954 he was Italian champion at the Independent Road Championships and won the Trofeo Fenaroli road criterion that same year. Ciancola celebrated his last victory in 1955 at the Circuito delle Case Bruciate, an Italian circuit race. Before that, he had participated in the Giro d'Italia for the first time in his career . He came in 82nd among the 86 classified drivers. He achieved his best placement in sixth on the ninth stage.

Ciancola drove his last races as a professional driver in 1960 for the Italian team Ignis. He took part in the Giro d'Italia again and finished 92nd out of 97 riders.
