The 1951 UCI Road World Championships took place on September 2nd in Varese, Italy.

Racing action

The professional drivers drove 295.2 kilometers on a 15-kilometer circuit on which they had to complete twelve laps. For the first time since 1938, six German drivers took part in the world championship. When a breakaway group formed during the third round around the Italian Giuseppe Minardi , the German champion in the singles pursuit Heinrich Schwarzer was also there. During the course of the race, the group grew to eight drivers, who eventually crossed the finish line with a one-minute lead. On the home straight, the 32-year-old Swiss Ferdy Kübler left his competitors behind in a sprint and won with a lead of two bike lengths. He had achieved an average speed of 34.8 km / h. While the two local heroes Fiorenzo Magni and Antonio Bevilacqua sprinted for medal ranks two and three, Schwarzer secured 6th place. Of the 45 drivers who started, only 26 made it to the finish. The other five German drivers were also among those who had left. According to estimates, up to half a million viewers watched the professional race.

The amateurs, who had to cover 172.2 kilometers, saw an Italian one-two in front of their home crowd. With an hourly average of 36.6 km / h, the 21-year-old Gianni Ghidini won after a mass finish in a sprint ahead of his compatriot Rino Benedetti . 41 drivers reached the finish line, German racing drivers were not among them.
