UCI Road World Championships 1938
The 1938 UCI Road World Championships took place on September 5th in Valkenburg , the Netherlands . Because of the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the world championships were subsequently interrupted until 1946.
Racing action
The professional drivers covered a distance of 273 kilometers on which a 1500 meter long ascent to the Cauberg with an eleven percent gradient had to be mastered. The fastest with 34.5 km / h was the almost 24-year-old Belgian Marcel Kint , who secured the world championship title with a sprint from a four-man leading group. Of the 36 drivers who started the race, only eight came to the finish. All four German drivers were among those who were eliminated. In the amateurs, which had to drive 170 kilometers, 25-year-old Hans Knecht from Switzerland won ahead of his compatriot Josef Wagner . Knecht mastered the World Cup course with an hourly average of 34.9 kilometers.
