The Specialized-lululemon team won the women's team time trial; Ellen van Dijk (back row, center) became world champion in the individual time trial two days later.

The 80th UCI Road World Championships were held from September 21 to 29, 2013 in the Italian region of Tuscany . In addition to the city of Florence , which was the destination of all races, Lucca , Montecatini Terme and Pistoia were also hosts. This was the 13th time that Italy had hosted a road world championship, the last of which was held in Varese in 2008 .

Before the World Cup

In addition to Florence, Ponferrada ( Spain ), Hooglede-Gits ( Belgium ) and Genoa , which was not supported by the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI) or the National Olympic Committee of Italy (CONI), had applied to host this World Cup. After the successful election, the President of the Italian Federation Renato di Rocco said: "This is a victory for Italian cycling, a victory for the great Tuscan cycling tradition."

In October 2012, the announcement of the World Cup mascot caused public ridicule. Shortly after Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour titles after years of cheating, the UCI announced Pinocchio , whose nose grows with every lie, as the official advertising figure. The UCI had a completely different reason for choosing the mascot. "Our Pinocchio is connected to its roots, happy, athletic and attentive," said the World Cup website. Pinocchio continues to look to the horizon and thus express an optimistic attitude about the future.

course

Florence was the destination of all races, but some of the starts took place in the cities of Lucca , Pistoia and Montecatini Terme in order to continue the world championship through Tuscany . It started with the two team time trials , followed by the individual time trials , all of which were almost completely flat. Before the five road races , which were spread over three days, there was a day off. The races each began with a different length of travel to the circuit in Florence, which had been designed by Andrea Tafi . The route was 16.6 kilometers long and had two difficult climbs. The first to Fiesole (4.8 km at 6%, max. 9%) right at the beginning was the longer one, on the descent there was a shorter but extremely steep ramp (598 m at 12%, max. 19%). There were then around four kilometers to the finish.
