UCI Road World Championships 1992
The UCI Road World Championships 1992 were held in the September 5 and 6 Spanish Benidorm instead. With the exception of the women's team time trial, the results of the road cycling competitions at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona were also counted towards the World Cup.
Professionals
route
The professional drivers drove on a 21.8-kilometer circuit that they had to tackle twelve times. The start and finish were in the city of Benidorm, a holiday resort on the Mediterranean coast. The route initially led north, then swung westward into the southern edge of the Prebética cordillera. After 6.5 kilometers, the highest point was reached after a gentle climb with the 336 meter high Alto di Finestrat. In the mountain community of Finestrat, the circuit turned south, where it reached the Mediterranean coast after nine kilometers with a slight gradient at Cala. After a long straight, the route swiveled to the left after kilometer 21 onto the 500 meter long home straight.
Race course
The reporters spoke of a boring and uneventful course after the race, which was held at 34 degrees. Only after 220 kilometers in the penultimate lap did the Spaniard Miguel Indurain take the initiative and start an advance, which was followed by Tony Rominger from Switzerland, the French Laurent Jalabert and the Italian Claudio Chiapucci. During the last lap, other drivers caught up, including the two Germans Udo Bölts and Jens Heppner . Bölts and the Frenchman Luc Leblanc tried to break away from the leading group over the last few kilometers, but were quickly caught up again. On the home straight, the best sprinting ability that defending champion Gianni Bugno could show that day was decisive . He won with a bike length in front of the French Jalabert and the Russian driver Dimitri Konyshev . In the top group of 17, Heppner finished 11th and Bölts 14th. The German team started with twelve athletes, seven of which reached the finish line. With a total of 193 starters, a new record had been set, 90 drivers had survived the race.
