John Gill Junior

John Gill Jr. (born June 9, 1850 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  January 27, 1918 there ) was an American politician . Between 1905 and 1911 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Gill attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and then studied at the University of Maryland until 1870 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1871, he began to work in Baltimore in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1874 and 1877 he was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives ; from 1882 to 1886 and in 1904 and 1905 he was a member of the State Senate . From 1879 to 1874, Gill worked for the Baltimore City Legal Department. In 1884, 1888 and 1892 he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventionsat each of which Grover Cleveland was nominated as a presidential candidate. From 1888 to 1897 he was a Police Commissioner .

In the congressional elections of 1904 , Gill was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded James William Denny on March 4, 1905 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1911 . In 1910 he declined to run again. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Gill became a judge on the tax appeals court in Baltimore, where he died on January 27, 1918.
