Thomas Sprigg

Thomas Sprigg (born 1747 in Prince George's County , Province of Maryland , †  December 13, 1809 in Washington County , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1797 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Sprigg was the uncle of Congressman Richard Sprigg . He grew up during the British colonial era. Between September and December 1776, he was an ensign in a Maryland unit during the Revolutionary War . Between 1777 and 1780 he was a notary public for wills ( Register of Wills ) in Washington County. In the meantime he also acted there as a district council. Sprigg was politically in opposition to the federal government led by President George Washington . In the late 1790s he joined the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson .

In the congressional elections of 1792 Sprigg was elected in the fourth constituency of Maryland in the US House of Representatives, which was then still in Philadelphia , where he succeeded Samuel Sterett on March 4, 1793 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1797 . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives Sprigg no longer appeared politically.
