John Dennis (politician, 1807)

John Dennis (* 1807 with Princess Anne , Somerset County , Maryland , †  November 1, 1859 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Dennis was the son of the congressman of the same name John Dennis (1771-1806) and a cousin of Littleton Purnell Dennis (1786-1834), who was also a congressman. He attended the public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. He was also active in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career and became a member of the Maryland House of Representatives for the Whigs .

In the 1836 congressional election , Dennis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded John Nevett Steele on March 4, 1837 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1841 . In 1850 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Maryland Constitution. He died on November 1, 1959 on the Beckford estate near Princess Anne.
