John R. Foley

John Robert Foley (born October 16, 1917 in Wabasha , Minnesota , †  November 11, 2001 in Kensington , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1961 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Foley attended St. Felix High School in his native Wabasha until 1935 . He then studied until 1940 at St. Thomas College in Saint Paul . During the Second World War he served in the US Army between 1941 and 1946 . After studying law at Catholic University and Georgetown University in the federal capital Washington, DC and being admitted to the bar in 1950, he began to work in this profession. He then gave lectures on law himself. Between 1954 and 1958, Foley was a judge at the Guardianship Court in Montgomery County , Maryland. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1956 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the 1958 congressional election , Foley was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded DeWitt Hyde on January 3, 1959 , whom he had defeated in the election. Since he was defeated by the Republican Charles Mathias in 1960 , he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1961. In 1962, John Foley competed unsuccessfully to return to Congress. Then he withdrew from politics. He died on November 11, 2001 in Kensington of complications from a heart attack.
