Charles Thomas "Tom" McMillen (born May 26, 1952 in Elmira , New York ) is a retired American basketball player . After the end of his sports career, he became politically active and represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993 .

Career

Charles McMillen attended Mansfield High School in Pennsylvania until 1970 and then studied at the University of Maryland until 1974 . He then continued his education until 1978 at the University of Oxford in England . McMillen was drawn in the first round of the 1974 NBA draft by the Buffalo Braves , but initially played in Italy for Sinudyne Bologna . In 1975 he returned to the United States and played one season with his home club in Buffalo . Other stations were the New York Knicks (1976–1977), the Atlanta Hawks (1977–1983) and the Washington Bullets (1983–1986).

McMillen started an electronic parts company and became the chairman of an investment firm. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In the 1986 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Marjorie Holt on January 3, 1987 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . In 1992, after a reorganization of the constituencies, he unsuccessfully applied in the first district to remain in Congress.

Between 1993 and 1998, McMillen was vice chairman of the President-appointed Fitness Commission. Today he lives in Crofton .
