Beverly Barton Butcher Byron (born July 27, 1932 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a former American politician . Between 1979 and 1993 she represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Beverly Barton Butcher, her maiden name, attended the National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington, DC until 1950. In 1961 and 1962 she studied at Hood College in Frederick . Through her marriage to the later Congressman Goodloe Byron , she became the daughter-in-law of William and Katharine Byron, who also belonged to the Maryland House of Representatives . Like them, she was a member of the Democratic Party . She served as treasurer of her party's youth organization in Maryland for 1962 and 1965.

In the 1978 congressional elections , she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington's sixth constituency in Maryland's sixth electoral district , where she took up her new mandate on January 3, 1979, as the successor to her late husband, who had since died and was originally scheduled to run again . After six re-elections, she was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . There she was temporarily a member of the Armed Forces Committee, the Committee on Island Affairs and the committee that dealt with issues of aging. Beverly Byron was considered a more conservative MP. In 1992 she was no longer nominated for re-election by her party.

In 1993 she became a member of a commission dealing with the closure of military bases. Today she lives in Frederick.
