James Morrison Harris
James Morrison Harris (born November 20, 1817 in Baltimore , Maryland , † July 16, 1898 there ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1861 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .
Career
James Harris attended private schools in his home country. He then graduated from Lafayette College in Easton ( Pennsylvania ) in 1833 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1843, he began to work in this profession in Baltimore. Politically, he joined the American Party in the 1850s .
In the congressional election of 1854 Harris was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Joshua Van Sant on March 4, 1855 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1861 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the American Civil War . In 1860 Harris declined to run again.
After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He was also active in education and in the religious field. From 1865 to 1872 he was the curator of Lafayette College . James Harris died in Baltimore on July 16, 1898.
