David Trone (born September 21, 1955 in Cheverly , Maryland ) is an American entrepreneur and politician of the Democratic Party . He was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in November 2018, representing Maryland's sixth congressional constituency .

Life

Trone earned a BA from Furman University in 1977 and a Masters of Business Administration from Wharton School in 1985 . Since completing his master's degree, Trone and his brother Robert have built a chain of discount stores for wine , beer and spirits . The company Total Wine & More in North Bethesda home, Maryland and scored 2013 more than 1.5 $ billion in sales in 101 stores.

In 2016, Trone ran unsuccessfully for Maryland's 8th district seat in the Democratic primary . He lost with 27.1% of the vote against the eventual incumbent Jamie Raskin , who received 33.6%.

In the 2018 congressional election , he ran in the sixth constituency in Maryland, whose mandate holder John Delaney did not run again. Trone prevailed in the democratic primaries with 40.07% of the vote against seven applicants. He won the general election with 57.5% against the Republican candidate , Amie Hoeber, who received 39.4%. His term began in January 2019.
