Herman Stump

Herman Stump (born August 8, 1837 in Harford County , Maryland , †  January 9, 1917 at Bel Air , Maryland) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Herman Stump enjoyed a good elementary school education. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1856, he began to work in Bel Air in this profession. He was also active in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1878 he was elected to the Maryland Senate, of which he was President in 1880. In 1879 he chaired the Maryland regional Democratic Party conference.

In the congressional elections of 1888 , Stump was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Frank Thomas Shaw on March 4, 1889 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1893 . In 1892 he decided not to run again. Between 1893 and 1897, Stump headed the Federal Immigration Service as Superintendent of Immigration . He then returned to practice as a lawyer in Bel Air. Herman Stump died on January 9, 1917 in his home near Bel Air.
