Gabriel Duvall
Gabriel Duvall (born December 6, 1752 in Prince George's County , Province of Maryland , † March 6, 1844 in Glenn Dale , Maryland ) was an American lawyer and Supreme Court Justice of the United States . From November 11, 1794 to March 28, 1796 he was a member of the US House of Representatives for the state of Maryland.
Life
From 1796 to 1802 he was a judge on the General Court of Maryland and from 1802 to 1811 head of the Treasury Department's accounting . In 1811 he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court to succeed Samuel Chase . He worked there until his retirement in 1834.
In his 23 years as a federal judge, Duvall wrote only 17 judgments. John Marshall served as President of the Tribunal throughout his tenure . In just two decisions, both had different opinions.
Duvalls house in Glenn Dale is now open to the public as a museum.
