George Dent

George Dent (born 1756 in Charles County , Maryland Province , †  December 2, 1813 in Augusta , Georgia ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1801 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Dent was born in 1756 on his father's estate, Windsor Castle . He attended the public schools in his home country. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. During the Revolutionary War he served in various units of the Maryland State Militia and the Continental Army , where he made it to captain. After the war, Dent embarked on a political career. Between 1782 and 1790 he was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives , of which he was president from 1789 and 1790. Dent also served as a judge in Charles County in 1791 and 1792. He was also a member of the Maryland Senate at the same time . In 1792 he was president of this chamber. Politically, he was close to the federal government under President George Washington ( pro-administration faction ) and became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton at the end of the 1790s .

In the congressional elections of 1792 Dent was elected in the first constituency of Maryland in the US House of Representatives, which was then still in Philadelphia , where he succeeded Philip Key on March 4, 1793 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1801 . Between 1797 and 1799 he occasionally represented the president of the house. Between 1799 and 1801 he was chairman of the electoral committee. In 1795 the eleventh amendment was ratified; in 1800, Congress and the President moved to the new federal capital Washington, DC

In April 1801, George Dent was appointed US Marshal for the area of ​​the new federal capital by the new President Thomas Jefferson . In 1802 he moved to Georgia, where he settled near Augusta. There he died on December 2, 1813 as a result of a riding accident.
