Career

Wayne Gilchrest attended Rahway High School until 1964 . He then served in the United States Marine Corps between 1964 and 1968 ; he was also used in the Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his achievements . After his military service he continued his education until 1971 at Wesley College in Dover ( Delaware ). He then attended the Delaware State College in the same city until 1973 . In the following years Gilchrest worked as a teacher. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives.

In the 1990 congressional election , Gilchrest was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Roy Dyson on January 3, 1991 , whom he had previously defeated in the election. After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . There he was a member of the Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure as well as four sub-committees. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Gilchrest was considered one of the most liberal Republican MPs ever. This went so far that in 2008 he sharply criticized his party and favored and ultimately voted for the Democratic presidential candidate and later election winner Barack Obama . That was one of the reasons why he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. He later left the Republican Party.
