John S. Spence

John Selby Spence (born February 29, 1788 in Snow Hill , Worcester County , Maryland , †  October 24, 1840 in Berlin , Maryland) was an American politician who represented the state of Maryland in both chambers of Congress .

After attending school, John Spence embarked on a career as a doctor. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1809 and began practicing in Worcester County. He was also early on in state politics and served in both the House of Representatives and the Maryland Senate . In 1882, Spence was first elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington . He stayed there from March 4, 1823 to March 3, 1825. On March 4, 1831, he returned as a member of the National Republican Party in Congress, from which he again resigned after two years.

After the death of US Senator Robert Henry Goldsborough on October 5, 1836, Spence was elected as his successor. He took up his mandate from December 31, 1836 and was confirmed for a further legislative term in the following election, but died in office in 1840. In the meantime he had joined the Whigs .

His nephew Thomas Ara Spence was also a member of the US House of Representatives from 1843 to 1845.
