George R. Dennis

George Robertson Dennis (* 8. April 1822 in Whitehaven , Somerset County , Maryland ; † 13. August 1882 in Kingston , Maryland) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . He represented the state of Maryland in the US Senate between 1873 and 1879 .

Life

George R. Dennis graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy ( New York ). He then attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia . After graduating in 1843, he began practicing medicine in Kingston, Somerset County. Later he worked in agriculture.

Dennis was first politically active in 1854 as a member of the Maryland Senate ; in 1871 he was a member of this parliamentary chamber again. In 1867 he was an MP in the Maryland House of Representatives . Finally, he was elected to the US Senate in Washington in 1872 to succeed George Vickers . There he served a full term from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1879 before returning to Maryland.
