George LP Radcliffe
George Lovic Pierce Radcliffe (born August 22, 1877 in Cambridge , Dorchester County , Maryland , † July 29, 1974 in Baltimore , Maryland) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Maryland in the US Senate .
Life
George Radcliffe was born on a farm in the small town of Lloyds near County Seat Cambridge. He attended both public and private schools before graduating from Cambridge Seminary in 1893 . Further degrees followed from Johns Hopkins University in 1897, from the Graduate School there in 1900 and from the Law School of the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Before he was admitted to the bar in 1903 and began practicing in Baltimore, he was the director of Cambridge Seminary and from 1901 to 1902 as a teacher at Baltimore City College . He was also involved in agriculture and banking.
During the First World War Radcliffe was from 1916 on the commission for the serving of alcohol in Baltimore, in which he remained until 1919; he was also a member of the State Defense Council. In 1919 he was named Secretary of State of Maryland. He held this post until 1920. From 1933 to 1934 he held public office again as a regional advisor to the Public Works Administration for Maryland, Delaware , Virginia , West Virginia , North Carolina , Tennessee , Kentucky and the District of Columbia .
In 1934 Radcliffe was elected as the successor to the no longer running Republican Phillips Lee Goldsborough against Joseph Irwin France as US Senator for Maryland. He was confirmed in office in 1940 and ran for nomination for a third session in Congress in 1946 , but lost in the primary of his party to Herbert O'Conor . Radcliffe resigned from the Senate on January 3, 1947, and took care of his interests in agriculture and banking. He continued to take an active part in public life. George Radcliffe died in Baltimore at the age of almost 97; he was buried in Cambridge cemetery.
