Paul Sarbanes

Paul Spyros Sarbanes (born February 3, 1933 in Salisbury , Maryland ) is a former American politician of the Democratic Party . He was a US Senator for Maryland from 1977 to 2007 ; previously he had been a member of the US House of Representatives from 1971 .

The son of Greek immigrants was the longest-serving senator ever served for the state of Maryland; he did not run for re-election in 2006. In 2004 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Sarbanes is characterized by its cautious politics, which mostly shy away from the general public. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act is named after him, which was supposed to restore confidence in the economy after the accounting scandals in the USA. His political career began in 1967 when he entered the Maryland House of Representatives , where he remained until 1971.

Sarbanes' son John is also active as a politician and has represented Maryland as a member of the US House of Representatives since 2007.
