James Black Groome
James Black Groome (born April 4, 1838 in Elkton , Cecil County , Maryland , † October 5, 1893 in Baltimore , Maryland) was an American politician and from 1874 to 1876 governor of the state of Maryland and between 1879 and 1885 representative of his state in the US Senate .
Early years and political advancement
James Groome attended Tennent School in Pennsylvania . Then he studied law with his father. After his admission to the bar in 1861, he began to work in his new profession in Elkton. Due to his poor health, he did not serve as a soldier in the Civil War . In 1867 he attended a conference to revise the Maryland Constitution. As a member of the Democratic Party , he was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives from 1872 to 1874 . In 1872 he was one of the democratic electors in the presidential election.
Governor and US Senator
After the resignation of Governor William Pinkney Whyte , he was appointed by the legislature as his successor. Between March 4, 1874 and January 12, 1876, he served as governor of his state. This time passed without any particular incident. Groome essentially continued the policies of his predecessor. The introduction of glass ballot boxes and a constitutional amendment are worth mentioning. Groome originally planned to stand for re-election. But when there were serious disputes with his party in the run-up to the elections, he withdrew his candidacy. After the end of his governorship, he returned to work as a lawyer.
Between March 4, 1879 and March 3, 1885 Groome represented his state in the US Senate. He succeeded George R. Dennis as a Class 3 Senator . Groome only served a six-year term in the Senate. Ephraim K. Wilson took over his seat there on March 4, 1885 .
Another résumé
In 1889, Groome was appointed Collector of Customs in the Port of Baltimore by President Grover Cleveland . He held this office until 1893. James Groome died in October of that year. He had a child with his wife, Alice Lee Edmondson.
