James Thomas

James Thomas (born March 11, 1785 in Saint Mary's County , Maryland , † December 25, 1845 ibid) was an American politician and governor of the state of Maryland from 1833 to 1836 .

Early years

James Thomas attended St. John's College and then until 1804 the Charlotte Hall Academy . He then studied until 1807 at the University of Pennsylvania medicine. Between 1808 and 1812 he served as Justice of the Peace in Saint Mary's County. From 1810 he was also a judge at a tax court and from 1811 at a guardianship court in the same district.

Political rise

He served in a unit out of Maryland during the War of 1812 . He was characterized by special bravery. By the end of the war he had made it from major to major general . Between 1824 and 1830 Thomas was a member of the Maryland Senate . On January 7, 1833, he was elected by the legislature as a member of the Whig Party as the new governor of his state.

James Thomas took up his new office on January 17, 1833. After he was confirmed in his office in 1834 and 1835, he was able to remain in office until January 14, 1836. During this time, the expansion of the railroad network throughout the state of Maryland continued. Schools were financially better funded and a geological survey was commissioned to explore the state's mineral resources. During this time there were also negative developments. The Bank of Maryland collapsed and a cholera epidemic struck the state. After the end of his tenure, James Thomas retired from politics. The ex-governor, married to Elizabeth Coates, died in late 1845 and was buried in "Deep Falls" in Saint Mary's County.
