Lloyd Lowndes, Jr. (born February 21, 1845 in Clarksburg , Virginia , †  January 8, 1905 in Cumberland , Maryland ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Maryland from 1896 to 1900 . He also represented his state in the US House of Representatives between 1873 and 1875 .

Early years and political advancement

Lloyd Lowndes was born in Clarksburg in what is now West Virginia . He attended Clarksburg Academy , Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania, and Allegheny College . After studying law at the University of Pennsylvania , he was admitted to the bar in 1867. Then he began to practice in Cumberland in his new profession. At the same time he began a successful career as an entrepreneur. Among other things, he was the owner of the newspaper "Cumberland Daily News".

Lowndes was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented his state in the US House of Representatives in Washington . In the following 20 years he returned to his private business, which in the meantime also included banking. On November 5, 1895 he was elected the new governor of his state. He became the first Governor of the Republican Party in Maryland since Thomas Holliday Hicks , who served as governor from 1858 to 1862.

Lloyd Lowndes began his four-year term on January 8, 1896. During his reign the Spanish-American War fell , to which Maryland also had to make a contribution. In terms of domestic policy, a geological report was commissioned. In addition, the state's electoral laws have been revised. The city of Baltimore received a new municipal constitution.

In 1899, Lowndes ran unsuccessfully for a second term. Therefore, he had to resign on January 10, 1900 from his office. In the following years he was the political leader of the Republicans in Maryland. Otherwise he devoted himself to his numerous private businesses. Lloyd Lowndes died on January 8, 1905. He had six children with his wife, Elizabeth Tasker Lowndes.
