James Pearce

James Alfred Pearce (born December 14, 1805 in Alexandria , Virginia , † December 20, 1862 in Chestertown , Maryland ) was an American politician . He represented the state of Maryland in both houses of Congress .

After attending private school in his native Virginia, Pearce began studying law at the College of New Jersey , now Princeton University . He graduated in 1822 and was admitted to the bar upon graduation, after which he began to work as a lawyer in Cambridge in 1824 . The following year he moved to Louisiana , where he was engaged in sugar beet growing ; In 1828 he returned to Maryland and was again a lawyer in Chestertown.

James Pearce was a member of the Whigs , for he 1831-1835 the Maryland House of Delegates ( House of Delegates belonged). In 1835 he moved to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he stayed until 1839. In the 1838 election he lost his seat to Philip F. Thomas , but returned in 1841 for another two-year term.

In 1843 Pearce was elected to the US Senate . He defended his seat in three re-elections before dying in office in 1862; most recently in 1861 after a change of party, he became a democrat . He served on the Library of Congress Committee during his tenure in the Senate , and also served on the Finance Committee for a brief period.
