Thomas D'Alesandro
Thomas D'Alesandro Jr. (born August 1, 1903 in Baltimore , Maryland , † August 23, 1987 there ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1947 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives . He was the father of the Speaker of the House of Representatives , Nancy Pelosi .
Career
Thomas D'Alesandro attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Calvert Business College in Baltimore. In the following years he worked in the real estate industry and in stock market trading. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1926 and 1933 he was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives ; from 1935 to 1938 he was a member of the Baltimore City Council. In 1933 and 1934 he worked for the tax authorities. Between 1944 and 1968 he was a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions .
In the 1938 congressional election , D'Alesandro was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Vincent Luke Palmisano on January 3, 1939 . After five re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on May 16, 1947 . Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences.
His resignation came after his election as mayor of Baltimore . He held this office as the successor to Theodore McKeldin between 1947 and 1959. In 1954, he first applied for the office of governor of Maryland. But after he was involved in a corruption scandal, he withdrew his candidacy. In 1958 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . Between 1961 and 1969 he was a member of the Federal Renegotiation Board . He also worked in the insurance and real estate business. Thomas D'Alesandro died in Baltimore on August 23, 1987.
