Edward Henry Carroll Long

Edward Henry Carroll Long (born September 28, 1808 in Princess Anne , Somerset County , Maryland , †  October 16, 1865 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1845 and 1847 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Long attended the public schools of his home country and then studied at Yale College until 1828 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1830, he began to work in Princess Anne in this profession. He also worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In the mid-1830s he became a member of the Whig Party, which was then founded . He served in the Maryland House of Representatives from 1833 to 1835, and from 1839, 1844, and 1861 .

In the congressional election of 1844 Long was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Thomas Ara Spence on March 4, 1845 . Since he refused to run again in 1846, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1847 . This was overshadowed by the events of the Mexican-American War .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Long worked again as a lawyer and in agriculture. In 1860 he was a member of the Maryland Senate . In the same year he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . He died on October 16, 1865 in his hometown of Princess Anne.
