William Matthews (politician)

William Matthews (born April 26, 1755 in Cecil County , Province of Maryland , † around 1808) was an American politician . Between 1797 and 1799 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nothing is known about William Matthews' youth and schooling. He must have studied law because between 1778 and 1786 he was a judge in Cecil County several times. He served in the Maryland House of Representatives from 1786 to 1789 . In the late 1790s he became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton .

In the congressional elections of 1796 Matthews was elected in the sixth constituency of Maryland to the US House of Representatives, which was then still in Philadelphia , where he succeeded Gabriel Christie on March 4, 1797 , who then succeeded Gabriel Christie on March 4, 1799 has been. Diplomatic relations with France deteriorated during his time in Congress . This development later almost led to a war.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, the trail of William Matthews is lost. He died in an unspecified location around 1808 and was buried in the Cecil County family cemetery.
