Rogers Clark Ballard Morton (* 19th September 1914 in Louisville , Kentucky ; † 19th April 1979 in Easton , Maryland ) was an American politician who among the presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford interior minister and under Ford and Secretary of Commerce of the United States was. He also represented Maryland's 1st Congressional District in the House of Representatives .

Career

Morton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1937 and served in the United States Army during World War II , where he rose to the rank of Captain . From 1939 to 1951 he worked for the Ballard and Ballard Company , which he headed from 1947 as head of the company.

In the early 1950s, Morton moved from Kentucky to a farm in the Eastern Shore of Maryland. From 1963 to 1971 he represented Maryland in the United States House of Representatives. In 1968 he played a leading role in Richard Nixon's successful presidential candidacy, and in 1969 he was appointed chairman of the Republican National Committee .

In the 1970 election, Morton was credited with having a good chance of replacing Joseph Tydings as Senator for Maryland; however, he decided to continue to chair the Republican National Committee.

On January 29, 1971, Morton became the 39th Secretary of the Interior of the United States. His tenure included the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline , the 1973 oil crisis and the beginnings of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act . He was the only interior minister from the east coast during the 20th century.

After Nixon's resignation as a result of the Watergate affair , Morton remained in office under Gerald Ford until April 30, 1975. He was then from May 1, 1975 to February 2, 1976 the 22nd Secretary of Commerce of the United States. From April to August 1976 he worked as an election campaign manager for Ford and resigned from his political offices after its defeat. He died of cancer three years later on his Maryland farm.

Rogers Morton's brother Thruston Ballard was also a Republican politician and was a member of both houses of the US Congress .
