Roy Owen West

Roy Owen West (* 27. October 1868 in Georgetown , Vermilion County , Illinois ; † 29. November 1958 in Chicago , Illinois) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), of the Cabinet of President Calvin Coolidge as interior minister belonged .

After studying law at DePauw University in Greencastle ( Indiana ) West worked as a lawyer in Chicago. In Cook County he served between 1898 and 1914 as a member of the Board of Review , a county authority that was responsible, among other things, for collecting property tax. He became active as a politician after the turn of the century. He was President of the Republicans in Illinois between 1904 and 1914; In 1908 he first took part in the Republican National Convention in Chicago. In 1912, 1916 and again in 1928 he was again a delegate at the federal party congresses. From 1912 to 1916 and from 1928 to 1932 West was a member of the Republican National Committee .

After the resignation of Home Secretary Hubert Work on July 24, 1928, Roy Owen West was nominated by President Coolidge as his successor. With the end of Coolidge's reign on March 4, 1929, West also resigned from the cabinet ; He was unable to set many accents during this time.

In honor of Roy West, who died in November 1958, the library at DePauw University was named after him.
