Henry Moore Teller (born May 23, 1830 in Granger , Allegany County , New York , † February 23, 1914 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American politician .

Life

After attending the Rushford Academy and the Alfred Academy, Teller was a trained teacher and initially worked in New York City . At the same time he studied law and was admitted to the Binghamton Bar in 1858 . After living briefly in Illinois in 1858, he moved to Colorado in 1861.

Here Teller was major general of the militia from 1862 to 1864 , initially engaged in road construction and invested in real estate. After Colorado became a member of the United States, Teller successfully ran for a seat in the United States Senate in 1876 ​​as a Republican party member . He moved into parliament on November 15, 1876, where he held his seat until April 17, 1882. In 1882, US President Chester A. appointed Arthur Teller as Secretary of the Interior of the United States ; Teller stayed that way until 1885.

In the same year Teller ran again for a Senate seat, and was again able to move to Washington, DC as Senator for Colorado in Congress on March 4, 1885 . In 1896, due to internal party differences at the Republican Congress in St. Louis, Tellers broke with his party, so that in 1897 he also successfully ran for a seat in the Senate as a member of the Silver Republican Party . Teller made the biggest change in 1903 when he entered the Senate with a ticket from the Democratic Party . Teller, who had a wide following in Colorado, was instrumental in strengthening the Democrats in Colorado through his behavior. Teller sat in the Senate for a total of 24 years, from which he left on March 3, 1909.
