Alan Wayne Allard (born December 2, 1943 in Fort Collins , Colorado ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Colorado in both chambers of Congress .

Life

Allard studied veterinary medicine at Colorado State University and received his PhD in 1968. From 1983 to 1990 he was a full-time veterinarian and also represented two counties, Larimer County and Weld County , in the Colorado Senate . Allard was then a member of the US House of Representatives from 1991 to 1997 and was then elected to the United States Senate. In 2002 he was re-elected, again was his, albeit narrowly, defeated rival the Democrat Tom Strickland . In the 2008 election, Allard did not run.

In April 2006, Time Magazine awarded him, along with four colleagues, the unflattering title “America's Five Worst Senators”. The magazine called him the "Invisible Man" and one of the "Least Influential Senators." But he was credited with the fact that he was ready to take on ungrateful tasks without grumbling; for example, he was responsible for overseeing work on the new visitor center on Capitol Hill . It was also positively noted that he returned unused funds from his office to the state, a practice not taken for granted among senators.

In January 2008, Allard announced that he would no longer seek re-election to the Senate. Republican Bob Schaffer ran for the mandate, but was defeated by Democrat Mark Udall , who became Allard's successor on January 3, 2009.
