Benjamin C. Hilliard

Benjamin Clark Hilliard (born January 9, 1868 in Osceola , Clarke County , Iowa , † August 7, 1951 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1915 and 1919 he represented the first constituency of the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Hilliard attended public schools in Iowa and Kansas . He then worked in Kansas himself as a teacher. After studying law at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and his were made in 1891 admitted to the bar Hilliard began in Kansas City ( Missouri to work in his new job). In 1893 he moved to Denver, the capital of the state of Colorado. From 1896 to 1897 he was an attorney for the City of Highlands . Between 1897 and 1907 Hilliard was District Attorney in Elbert County , from 1907 to 1913 he practiced the same position in Grand County .

Hilliard was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1902 he was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. From 1909 to 1917 he was a member of the Denver City School Board, with a few interruptions. In 1914 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Colorado , where he replaced George J. Kindel on March 4, 1915 . After a re-election in 1916, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1919 . In 1918 he declined to run again. After that he worked again as a lawyer. Since 1930 he was a judge at the Colorado Supreme Court , whose chair he later took over as Chief Justice temporarily.
