Joseph "Joe" Neguse (born May 13, 1984 in Bakersfield , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . In November 2018 he was first in the United States House of Representatives voted, where he the second since January 2019 congressional district of Colorado represents.

Life

Joe Neguse's parents immigrated to the United States from what is now Eritrea . He grew up in California and Colorado where he attended high school. Neguse earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2005 and a law degree ( JD ) from the law school there in 2009 .

Then he worked as a lawyer; after leaving the civil service, he joined a law firm where he practices administrative law.

Neguse is married and has one child.

politics

Neguse initially worked as an assistant to Speaker of Parliament Andrew Romanoff in the Colorado House of Representatives . In 2008 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the University of Colorado on a proposal from the Democrats.

In 2014 he ran for the office of Secretary of State of Colorado without success . However, he was replaced by Governor John Hickenlooper as director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies in June 2015.He resigned from that position in 2017 to run for the US House of Representatives.

Neguse ran in the 2018 congressional election for the seat in the second constituency in Colorado, whose mandate holder Jared Polis successfully ran for governor of Colorado. He prevailed against another candidate in the democratic primary with 65.7% of the vote. He won the general election with 60.0% against the Republican candidate , Peter Yu, who received 33.9%. He took up his mandate on January 3, 2019.
